Advancing Neurological Education in East Texas
We are excited to have been approved by ACGME to be the first Neurology residency program in East Texas. As a new program, we can build from the ground up and craft a unique training program for the bright minds of tomorrow, some of whom we hope will continue to live and practice in our region and serve the needs of the vibrant East Texas community. A graduate medical education program in Neurology is the crucial step of professional development between medical school and autonomous clinical practice under the supervision of faculty role models.
Our goal is to provide excellent training with graded authority and responsibility for eventual autonomous, safe, affordable and equitable patient care. We look to train strong clinicians who are equipped to enter independent practice or pursue additional fellowship training if they choose. We hope to foster a culture of lifelong learning and finding joy in curiosity and discovery.
For July 2025, we will recruit PGY-2-year residents who will have completed their intern year at various places across the country, including UT Tyler’s Transitional Year residency program. Our goal is that for 2027, the program will be able to simultaneously interview for PGY-1 and PGY-2 years ensuring an intern year at UT Tyler for anyone that matches to Neurology. Eventually, we will work towards creating a categorical program in Neurology.
Our faculty are well trained and certified in general neurology, pediatric neurology, clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular medicine, headache, cognitive and behavioral neurology, movement disorders and autonomic disorders. In addition, we have program letters of agreement with reputable institutions within Tyler and Dallas to train in niche specialty areas such as: child neurology, autoimmune neurology, neuro-oncology and epilepsy. We have robust GME programs in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology and Neurosurgery to support the multidisciplinary care of neurology patients.
