Annual Events

At the UT Tyler School of Medicine, we believe that strong connections and shared experiences help shape well-rounded physicians. Student Affairs hosts events throughout the year to foster camaraderie, recognize achievements, and provide opportunities for students to unwind and recharge. Some of our annual events that support student life are listed below:

Orientation & Fifth Week

Starting medical school is a big transition, and we make sure our students feel welcomed from day one. Orientation introduces incoming students to their peers, faculty, and the resources that will support them throughout their journey. Five weeks later, we come together again for Fifth Week, a unique UT Tyler tradition designed to check in, reflect, and celebrate the progress made during those first crucial weeks.

White Coat Ceremony

The White Coat Ceremony marks the official beginning of a student’s medical career. This time-honored tradition welcomes our future physicians into the profession with the presentation of their first white coat, a symbol of their commitment to compassionate care and lifelong learning. Surrounded by faculty, family, and friends, students take the Hippocratic Oath and step forward into their medical education with pride.

Match Day

One of the most exciting days in a medical student’s journey, Match Day is when students learn where they will continue their training as resident physicians. Although our first Match Day is still on the horizon, we look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with our students as they take the next step in their careers.

Student Clinician Ceremony

Transitioning from pre-clinical to clinical training is a major milestone, and the Student Clinician Ceremony honors and celebrates students as they finish Phase I. The ceremony reinforces the core values of medicine, offers words of wisdom from faculty and peers, and provides a moment to reflect on the journey ahead.

SOM’s Got Talent

Our students are more than future doctors—they’re artists, musicians, comedians, and performers! SOM’s Got Talent is a fun-filled evening where students showcase their hidden talents, cheer on their peers, and take a break from their studies to celebrate creativity and expression.

Trivia Night

Test your knowledge and enjoy some friendly competition at Trivia Night! Hosted by Student Affairs, this event brings students together for a night of brain-teasing fun, teamwork, and plenty of laughs. Whether you're a trivia pro or just there for the snacks, it’s a great way to relax and connect with classmates.

Student Affairs Lunches

Affairs Lunches provide a chance for students to connect with Student Affairs faculty and staff in a relaxed setting. Whether it’s discussing academic challenges or just catching up, these lunches foster a sense of community and support.

House Olympics

Who says medical students can’t be competitive? House Olympics is an exciting day of team-based challenges where students compete in fun physical and mental activities, all while representing their academic house. It’s a fantastic way to build friendships, show off school spirit, and engage in some healthy competition.

Medical School Prom

A night to dress up, dance, and celebrate! Coordinated by our Student Senate, Med School Prom is a beloved tradition where students step away from their rigorous schedules to enjoy an evening of music, food, and fun. It's a perfect opportunity to unwind and make memories with classmates.

Graduation

Graduation will be a milestone event, commemorating years of hard work, dedication, and growth. As we anticipate our inaugural commencement, we look forward to honoring the accomplishments of our students and their transition from medical school to the next stage of their professional lives.
