Career Success

Career Success

Medical students receive tailored career advisement through a strong support network. This network connects students with mentors, including faculty, staff, residents, and upper classmen, all guided by the Careers in Medicine framework. Students have access to a variety of resources and experts who assist them in exploring career options. The system consists of four key components: the Office of Student Affairs, Departmental Faculty Advisors, Student Interest Group Advisors, and Academic Houses. Together, these elements provide thorough guidance to help students navigate their path to becoming physicians.

Career Advising Hours

Students seeking career advising are encouraged to visit the Student Services suite (H Building, 1st Floor) every Thursday.

  • Phase 1 & 3: Drop-in advising is available from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Phase 2: Due to the clerkship schedule, advising is available by appointment.

During these hours, students can receive guidance on career planning, academic assistance, and wellness support. The Student Affairs team reserves this time to be readily available to assist students with their needs.

Individual Advising

Students seeking personalized guidance on career discernment, enhancing competitiveness, building a CV, crafting a personal statement, requesting letters of recommendation, applying to residency programs, creating a rank list, and more can schedule individual appointments with the Director of Academic and Career Success and the Student Affairs Career Advisor. Additionally, workshops on these topics are offered throughout the year to support students in their career planning.

Career Development Events

The Office of Student Affairs sponsors career development events tailored to students at various stages of their academic journey:

  • Phase 1
    • During new student orientation and retreat, students gain access to the AAMC Careers in Medicine website.
    • A session led by the Student Affairs team introduces key career resources.
    • Career Socials for early career exposure.
  • Phase 2
    • Phase 2 Orientation provides opportunities for students to learn and be reminded of development opportunities from various specialties.
    • These interactions help students further refine their career options.
  • Phase 3
    • Events such as Career Day and Phase 3 Orientation provide opportunities for students to interact one-on-one with faculty advisors from various specialties.
    • Mock interviews, career prep workshops.
    • Students receive targeted coaching and individualized guidance.
    • Support is provided as they prepare and apply for residency programs.

Career development events are announced via the Student Affairs newsletter and added to students’ calendars to ensure they stay informed.

Faculty Advisors

While all faculty members can offer informal guidance on specialty selection, most clinical departments have designated faculty who serve as formal career advisors. These advisors stay informed on current trends within their specialty to provide up-to-date guidance to students. They also sponsor specialty interest groups to support early career exploration and offer advice on participating in various programs throughout the year in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs.
