Academic Success
At the UT Tyler School of Medicine, the Office of Student Affairs is dedicated to ensuring the academic success of our medical students every step of the way. Our Director of Academic and Career Success and Learning Specialist offer a comprehensive range of resources to support students, including personalized academic advising, academic workshops, PALS tutoring, and Board exam prep assistance. Students can also engage with Course Directors to discuss course content, address concerns, and deepen their understanding. Together with UT Tyler Faculty, we track academic progress and customize elective coursework to keep students on track with their professional aspirations. Our goal is to provide the tools and guidance necessary to help students thrive and succeed in their medical education.
Academic Advising Office Hours
Students seeking academic advising are encouraged to visit the Student Services suite (H Building, 1st Floor) every Thursday.
- Phase 1 & 3: Drop-in advising is available from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Phase 2: Due to the clerkship schedule, advising is available by appointment.
During these hours, students can receive guidance on career planning, academic assistance, and wellness support. The Student Affairs team reserves this time to be readily available to assist students with their needs.
Individual Advising
Students seeking personalized support to enhance academic skills, overcome academic challenges, create study plans, prepare for exams, or select Phase 3 electives can schedule one-on-one appointments with the Director of Academic and Career Success or the Learning Specialist.
Academic Workshops
The Office of Student Affairs offers a range of academic workshops designed to support medical students at every stage of their medical school journey. Tailored to align with each phase of the curriculum, these workshops equip students with practical tools and strategies for academic enhancement. From navigating the first year to preparing for Board exams, our workshops are an invaluable resource for boosting academic performance and fostering long-term success. PALS Tutoring
The Peer Assisted Learning Specialist (PALS) Tutoring Program within the Office of Student Affairs provides students with the opportunity to receive academic support from their peers. This program emphasizes creating a collaborative learning environment that fosters understanding and academic growth among peers. Whether it's reinforcing course material, preparing for exams, or gaining a deeper understanding of complex concepts, our PALS offer valuable insights and guidance. This program is designed to enhance student success by promoting active learning, building confidence, and strengthening academic skills through peer-driven support.
