Family Medicine Athens Residency Welcome

Welcome to the Family Medicine residency program located in Athens, Texas, where the tradition of full scope family medicine meets evidence-based graduate medical education.

Our mission is to train resident physicians to provide high-quality healthcare for patients of all ages and their families. We provide accessible, compassionate care for the whole person through all phases of life. We focus on disease prevention, as well as healing current maladies. Program Highlights:

  • Accredited in 2020, the Family Medicine program in Athens builds on our community's rich legacy of full-scope family medicine. We aim to provide a unique opportunity to serve rural populations. 

  • Residents obtain unopposed training in inpatient, critical care, L&D, and emergency medicine training at UT Health Athens hospital, which serves Henderson County and surrounding cities. 

  • Residents receive one-on-one surgical obstetrics training from fellowship-trained family medicine OB physicians and participate in over 700 deliveries a year, providing care for mother and baby. 

  • With a full roster of 18 residents (six per year), our program ensures that each resident receives personalized mentorship from both core faculty and community physicians. 

  • The program provides unparalleled commmunity integration, allowing residents to work with and learn from an underserved population, partnering with FQHC and private practices such as East Texas Community Clinic and Lakeland Medical Associates.
