Master of Science in Biotechnology Admissions

 

Application Prerequisites

To be admitted to the master’s degree program in biotechnology at UT Health Science Center, a student must hold a bachelor’s degree, ideally in biology or chemistry, but a degree in a related field (bio-physics or physics with a biological emphasis) is acceptable. Students must have completed Biochemistry I or an equivalent with a grade of B or better.

Application Requirements

  • Students must complete the graduate program application for admission into the biotechnology graduate program (available on the university website).
  • Applicants must submit official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended, including community colleges.
  • Applicants should have an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a 3.0 in their field of study. (If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, it is possible to be admitted on a probationary status. You should contact the program coordinator to see if your GRE scores and/or combination of other factors might meet the requirements for admission.)
  • Applicants must have a minimum combined score of 295 on the GRE: 150 on the quantitative section and 145 on the verbal section. (You can sign up for the GRE online (www.ets.org/gre) as well as find out about testing centers and dates. If you have already taken the GRE, this site will allow you to request an official copy of your scores.)
  • All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. These letters should be written by former professors as a means to highlight why you would do well in the biotechnology graduate program.

Application Deadlines

Biotechnology students are admitted each Fall semester. Admission is not offered in the Spring or Summer semesters.

December 15 – First Review of applicants for the following fall semester.

April 15 - Second Review of applicants for following fall semester. Waitlisted applicants from the first review will automatically be included in the second review.

Application Process

Complete and submit the graduate program application at least 30 days prior to entering the program. UT Health Science Center accepts credit or recognizes degrees from accredited institutions.

The following documents should accompany your application:

  • Statement of Purpose.
  • GRE Test Scores.
  • Letters of Recommendation (3).
  • CV/Resume.
  • Official Transcript(s).

Applicants with bachelor’s degrees from foreign institutions must provide satisfactory English proficiency exam scores [Minimums: TOEFL (79), IELTS (6.5 band with at least a 6.0 in each subsection), PTE (53), or Duolingo English Test (105)] and a course-by-course international transcript as outlined here.

Admission Policies

An applicant for admission to graduate study must either (1) be in the final year of undergraduate work, or (2) hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. An applicant admitted to a graduate program at UT Health Science Center must enroll within three semesters of admission. Thereafter, the applicant must reapply for admission.

The application process will be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Admission and Scholarship Policies for Graduate and Professional Programs, which was adopted by the 77th Session of the Texas Legislature, and which amends Chapter 51 of the Texas Education Code.
