Message from the Dean
Meet our Dean
Welcome to the UT Tyler School of Medicine!
As the dean of The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, it's my pleasure to welcome you to our school.
The UT Tyler School of Medicine, as the seventh medical school in The University of Texas System and the first in East Texas, was founded to address the healthcare shortage in rural and underserved areas across our region. Our mission is to train future healthcare professionals who are equipped to meet the unique needs of these communities with humility, compassion and excellence. Through everything we do—whether in the classroom, clinical clerkships or simulation labs—our goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to make a lasting impact.
We offer a robust Graduate Medical Education program with over 20 residency, fellowship and internship training programs, including specialties like family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, surgery and anesthesia. These programs give our graduates the opportunity to continue their post-graduate training and remain in East Texas to serve their communities. Additionally, we’re expanding our academic offerings with the launch of a new PhD program in Integrated Biomedical Sciences, beginning in fall 2025, to further support innovation in medical research and our MS in Biotechnology graduate program.
As part of our commitment to interdisciplinary education and community engagement, we are constructing a five-story, nearly 250,000-square-foot Medical Education Building in Tyler’s Midtown District. Scheduled for completion in fall 2025, this facility will serve as a hub for cutting-edge medical education and research, supporting both medical students, residents and fellows. Connected by a sky bridge to UT Health Tyler, it will be a key component of our ongoing expansion throughout the UT Health East Texas system.
At the School of Medicine, we are fully committed to investing in our students, ensuring they are prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow and serve our region. Addressing the healthcare needs of East Texas will be a team effort, requiring collaboration between our local health systems, UT Tyler and the community.
Please join us in our mission to improve healthcare outcomes and enhance the quality of life across East Texas.
