Slips, Trips, & Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are a leading cause of workplace injuries and many of these incidents can be prevented with proper training, good housekeeping, and a careful eye. Farmers and ranchers have a high risk of slips, trips, and falls due to the various working surfaces in agricultural settings. Working conditions in the southern United States can also vary due to sudden changes in the weather. A vital component of the agricultural workplace that is prone to slips, trips, and falls is machinery.

How can you reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls while mounting and dismounting tractors and machinery?

  • Maintain three points of contact (two hands and one foot).
  • Clean the steps regularly. An incident is more likely to occur if the tractor steps are wet or muddy.
  • Be aware of changing weather conditions and soil conditions. Rain, sleet, snow, and ice can make the steps hazardous.
  • Wear snug-fitting clothes to prevent catches and snags that might lead to a slip or fall.
  • Always face the machine when mounting and dismounting.
  • Ensure the tractor is in park when mounting or dismounting.

Agricultural workers can slip and fall in many areas where they perform their daily tasks. Here are some general ideas to reduce slips, trips, and falls everywhere you work.

  • Use non-skid strips on wet working surfaces.
  • Maintain good housekeeping. Pick up after yourself!
  • Keep entrances and exits clear of hazardous materials.
  • Use slip-resistant footwear.
  • Use warning signs or labels for hazardous areas.

The tips suggested here are inexpensive or entirely free and they could prevent a costly injury. What steps can you take today to improve workplace safety for yourself and others? Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
