Transitional Year Residency Curriculum
Transitional Year Curriculum:
The Transitional Year curriculum is in the “X+Y” format, with four weeks of inpatient/elective rotations, followed by one week of Internal Medicine continuity clinic. This allows residents to maintain a panel of patients within their own clinic throughout the year, and also allows for an ambulatory block with at least one weekend off between each inpatient or elective rotation. The general Transitional Year track provides residents with a well-rounded training experience, with rotations in internal medicine wards, inpatient cardiology, general surgery, intensive care, emergency medicine, internal medicine ambulatory clinic, and several customizable electives.
Joint Program Tracks:
The UT Tyler Transitional Year program has established a joint A/P program with both occupation medicine and preventive medicine programs at our institution. The Transitional Year program works closely with the advanced programs to develop a curriculum that provides interns with an educational experience that fully prepares them for their future training. If you are applying for either of these programs, please also apply for the associated Transitional Year track using the NRMP codes below:
Occupational Medicine: NRMP - 3626999P2
Rotations include IM wards, cardiology, emergency medicine, surgery, orthopedics,
physical medicine & rehab, intensive care, primary care, and electives.
Preventive Medicine: NRMP – 3626999P1
Rotations include IM wards, cardiology, intensive care, emergency medicine, primary
care, preventive medicine-associated rotations, and electives.
Neurology Track:
We also offer a neurology track within the Transitional Year program for those interested in pursuing a PGY2 position in an advanced neurology program. The neurology track satisfies all the ACGME requirements for a preliminary year for neurology. Residents interested in this track should apply for the general Transitional Year program and notify the program director of their preference upon matching to the program.
Conferences and Lectures:
Transitional Year residents will integrate into the specialty with which they are rotating each block, being provided the same educational opportunities as categorical residents. They will also participate in the same didactics and lectures provided to the categorical residents for each rotation. In addition, Transitional Year residents will participate in monthly Transitional Year didactics that includes a town hall/open forum with lunch provided, case conferences presented by TY residents, and and lectures from faculty in various specialties, providing a broad overview of relevant topics.
All residents will receive access to Amboss, an online resource that provides articles, videos, guidelines, checklists, and other tools for a variety of specialties that will assist residents on their clinical rotations. The resource also provides a question bank to aid residents in studying for the USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX 3 examination.
