Mission Statement:

To improve the health of our community by preparing physicians to be providers of a person-centered, multidisciplinary approach to nephrology care.  We will develop physician leaders of tomorrow in Nephrology by training them to provide high-quality, compassionate care to patients with kidney disease and kidney transplants. 

Program Goals:

  • Educate fellows to become competent Nephrology specialists.  
  • Gain experience and the ability to manage nephrology patients.
  • Harbor a learning environment that promotes fellows to develop knowledge, skill base, and confidence.
  • Fellows will be trained in managing all aspects of kidney disease.
  • Fellows will be trained to interpret nephrology literature, research studies, and apply evidence-based advances into clinical practice.
  • Gain experience in how to develop and maintain continued education and become educators of the future.

Goals & Objectives:

The educational goal of our Nephrology Fellowship Program is to prepare fellows with the knowledge, skills, and attitude needed to provide excellent patient care in the field of nephrology.  

Competency is demonstrated throughout the six ACGME-accredited domains used by all residency and fellowship programs. Each of the six core competencies is divided into sub competencies as shown below.

  • UTH Inpatient consult service (UTH)
  • UTSW Inpatient Transplant (UTSW)
  • Home Therapies/ Outpatient transplant (HTOT)
  • Interventional nephrology/ Outpatient transplant (INOT)

Electives:

  • Interventional Nephrology: Hemodialysis vascular access procedures American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology certification is desired. Dialysis Ambulatory Surgical Center, Tyler.
  • Interventional Radiology/ Renal Radiology: Dialysis lines, dialysis access study and interventions, CT kidney biopsy, renal ultrasound, renogram, CT, MRI/MR): UTH Tyler.
  • Urology: UTH Tyler.
  • Palliative care: UTH Tyler.
  • Research: UTH Tyler (North campus).
  • Telehealth nephrology: CKC Tyler.Renal pathology: UTSW Dallas.
  • Pediatric Nephrology: UTSW Dallas.
