Biography

Dr. May Abdelaziz is an assistant professor at the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Tyler. She received a Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master in Pharmaceutical chemistry from Cairo University in Cairo, Egypt, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Abdelaziz has completed two postdoctoral research fellowships in drug discovery of neurologic agents at the University of Utah (U of U) and in cancer research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

She teaches the medicinal chemistry content of the PharmD curriculum at UT Tyler, including an introductory course on the Principles of Medicinal Chemistry as well as the medicinal chemistry of drug classes as part of the integrated pharmacotherapy courses. Her teaching experience also includes mentoring undergraduates, graduate, and professional students (pharmacy and nurse anesthesia) in several classes, laboratory, and research settings. Dr. Abdelaziz is an active member of several professional associations, including the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. 

Her research area is centered around drug discovery in several fields, with a special focus on kinases enzymes’ role in cell biology. Research interests include the discovery and characterization of allosteric modulators, screening of chemical and natural product libraries, studying enzyme kinetics, mechanisms of inhibition, and discovery and analysis of protein-protein interactions in cellular networks.  

Dr. Abdelaziz has participated in a multitude of service activities in several academic institutions, including academic advising, serving as graduate student association president, participating in the Quality Assurance of Education Unit, and supervising research trainees. She holds certificates in research administration and science teaching effectiveness. Among the awards she received are the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies, the Graduate School Dissertation award, the Teacher of the year award, and the VCU 10 under 10 award.
