The purpose of the SW Ag Center Outreach Mini Grants Program is to engage regional institutions, organizations, and agencies to expand agricultural occupational health and safety outreach within AR, LA, OK, NM, and TX. Outreach grants are intended to facilitate and expand the use of proven tools, methods, best practices and technologies among agricultural, forestry, and commercial fishing workers and their families.

Programmatic Priorities:

The theme of the SW Ag Center is “Leveraging strategic partnerships to advance best practices that promote and protect the health and safety of diverse AgFF populations.” All proposed programs must serve the SW Ag Center’s region.

Projects must address one or more of the Intermediate Outcomes from the SW Ag Center’s logic model:

  • New partners engage in Center outreach and/or research
  • SW Ag Center trainings, resources, and/or online materials are used by stakeholders
  • AgFF workers improve safety and health behaviors
  • Interns, residents, post-docs, and/or students and/or young professionals gain career experience in AgFF safety & health
  • AgFF workers and professionals use information gained through Center outreach in their workplaces
  • SW Ag Center’s reach and AgFF safety & health outreach is expanded

 

Key Dates & Information:

  • Letter of Intent: July 15th
  • Application Deadline: August 15th
  • Notice of Award: September 15th
  • Anticipated Start Date: September 30th
  • Final Report Due: October 31st (one month following project completion)
  • Number of Awards/Year: 2-3 awards
  • Duration of Award: 12 months
  • Award Amount: up to $10,000
  • Indirect costs are limited to 8%.

Assessing the Occupational Health and Safety Needs of Oklahoma Urban Food Producers

  • Project Leader: Joshua Campbell, Oklahoma State University
  • Goal: To improve the understanding of the occupational health and safety needs of urban agricultural producers in Oklahoma and to pilot a targeted Extension training program to support these producers.

Healthy Sustainable Food Sources

  • Goal: For agricultural students to gain knowledge and career-related experience while learning to safely grow and harvest vegetables, fruit, and fish.

  • Goal: To develop and improve the annual youth ATV safety training program.

Oklahoma 4-H ATV Rider Course

  • Goal: To educate you and adults in the safe operation of ATV vehicles with hands on rider training.

AgriLife Extension Farmer/Rancher Mental Health Impact Video

  • Project Leaders: Miquela Smith, MPH & Tiffany Dowell-Lashmet, JD, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
  • Goal: To produce a testimonial video of a Texas farmer or rancher with lived experience related to stress or mental health challenges to reduce stigma surrounding mental health in rural areas and increase awareness of stress and suicide related resources.

  • Goal: To convene a gathering for small-scale producers to share technical and mental strategies for addressing the Climate Crisis on Louisiana farms.

  • Goal: To educate youth and adults in the safe operation of ATV vehicles with hands on rider training.

Farm Safety Certificate Program

  • Project Leaders: Erin Kimbrough & Makenzie Thomas, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service
  • Goal: To launch the Farm Safety Certificate Program to improve the health and safety of agriculture producers in Texas through in-person and online safety training.

Agriculturally Focused Mental Health First Aid Programming for Current and Future Industry Members

  • Project Leaders: Jean Lonie Dudley, PhD & Chandra Andrew, PhD, Tarleton State University
  • Goal: To offer mental health first aid training to upper class students, agricultural educators, and agricultural industry groups.
  • 2023-2024

New Mexico Legal Aid

  • Project Leaders: Ricardo Trejo & Ismael Camacho
  • Goal: To provide Personal Protective Equipment, supplies, educational materials, and general technical support to migrant and seasonal farm workers and agricultural establishments in Southern New Mexico.

Louisiana 4-H ATV Safety Program

  • Project Leader: Daivd Boldt & Todd Tarifa, PHD, LSU AgCenter/Louisiana 4-H Youth Development
  • Goal: To educate the youth of Louisiana on the safe practices and responsible behavior associated with All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).
