Information about Mentoring Programs

Patriot Student Mentor Program

The Patriot Student Mentor Program connects new freshmen and transfer students with knowledgeable Faculty and Staff across campus, as well as a peer mentor, known as a Patriot Student Mentor! The first year of college can come with challenges and the goal of the PSMP is to provide first year students with a consistent, friendly face with whom they can always rely on. Best of all, participation in the mentoring program is FREE!

How are Mentors selected?

Faculty and Staff Mentors (FSMs) are selected through an application and screening process. Detailed questions about the mentor's experiences are asked, including:

  • Have you served as a mentor before?
  • Why are you interested in serving as a mentor?
  • What are some of your personal interests, hobbies and volunteer experiences?

Patriot Student Mentors (PSMs) must have served as an Orientation Leader or Camp Leader for the Office of New Student Programs, and must demonstrate a passion for student success!

How are Mentees paired with a Mentor?

Mentees are matched with a FSM based on similar interests, areas of study or other traits that allow the mentor to be a great resource. We ask our mentors lots of questions to find the best match for them, including:

  • What are you most excited about as it relates to starting school at UT Tyler?
  • What are you most nervous about as it relates to starting school at UT Tyler?
  • Would you consider yourself more introverted or more extroverted?
  • What are some of your personal interests, hobbies and volunteer experiences?

PSMs are matched with students based on area of study, interests and hobbies, and the activities the student anticipates being involved with!

Pairs are assigned and given one another's contact information. An exclusive calendar of events is available to all mentor and mentee pairings to help support their partnership and to provide an opportunity to spend time together with other mentor/mentee pairs on-campus.
