Dr. Cowart has taught Business Law and Business Ethics classes at the Soules College
of Business since 1999. She earned her law degree from Texas Tech University and has
practiced law in a variety of areas including tort law, business law, and employment
law. Her research interests include intellectual property, corporate governance and
compliance, and privacy law. She developed MBA courses in business law and business
ethics, as well as an undergraduate business ethics course which has been approved
by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy for CPA candidates. She was a founding
council member of the UT Tyler Center for Ethics and currently serves as the Associate
Director and Bart Brooks Professor of Ethics and Leadership.
Dr. Cowart has received awards including an Outstanding Faculty Award from the Texas
Alpha Xi Chapter of Alpha Chi, Outstanding Student Organization Advisor, and the Provost’s
Excellence in Teaching Award. She has served the Soules College of Business as the
Director of Undergraduate Programs and Director of Graduate Programs, and she has
served UT Tyler student organizations as a faculty advisor for Students in Free Enterprise
and Alpha Chi Omega.
Dr. Cowart is currently a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Smith County Bar Association,
the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and the Association for Practical and Professional
Ethics. She previously served as a member of the Junior League of Tyler, Women’s Symphony
League, and the City of Tyler Disability Issues Review Board and has served on the
board of a number of community organizations, including Junior Achievement, the Literacy
Council of Tyler, Smith County Chapter of the American Heart Association, and Smith
County Young Lawyers Association.
