Mr. Alger joined the Computer Science Department at The University of Texas at Tyler in August 2019. Mr. Alger began his teaching career as early as 1994, as an Assistant Language Instructor for the US Army. Upon leaving the Army, he received his first programming job as an Artificial Intelligence researcher at The Johns Hopkins University, where he also received his Master’s Degree. Mr. Alger then gained more programming and computer science experience as a Technical Director at a small business in Virginia. He won numerous Department of Defense contracts during this time.
Mr. Alger then moved to Texas and truly began his teaching career as a Professor of Computer Science at Tyler Junior College. He would remain there eleven years, winning numerous awards, and eventually rising to the level of Department Chair of Computer Science and Visual Arts. Mr. Alger helped found the Video Game Development program at Tyler Junior College and taught nearly every class available in that major. He would teach Video Game Programming and Video Game Design for most of his years at Tyler Junior College.
Teaching and Research Interests:
Mr. Alger’s primary teaching interests include algorithm analysis and design, video
game development, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and computer
science education. His research in the past has resulted in three publications, all
on various projects for the Department of Defense, including one for AAAI.
