Engineering Funding Opportunities
Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Education Program
This Department of Defense Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students
studying in the Science, Mathematics and Engineering fields and provides an annual
salary, full tuition, and other normal educational expenses. Applicants must be U.S.
citizens, and at least 18 years of age. There is an employment obligation to Department
of Defense with this education program.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships (NDSEG)
Sponsored by the Department of Defense, these fellowships are targeted for those pursuing
a graduate degree in science or engineering. Acceptance in graduate school is not
necessary before application, and funds can be used for any accredited graduate institution.
GEM Fellowships
Sponsored by the non-profit National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities
in Engineering and Science, the GEM Fellowship programs are designed to offer opportunities
for underrepresented minority students to obtain MS degrees in engineering and Ph.D.
degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences through a program of
paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.
Gates Millennium Scholar
Approximately 1000 awards are given to minority students with financial need. The
awards are targeted for undergraduate study in all disciplines or graduate study in
mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. Applicants should
have outstanding academic qualifications, strong leadership potential, and demonstrate
a commitment to community service. Although a nomination by a professional educator
is required, students are encouraged to approach faculty or administrators if they
have interest in this award.
Department of Homeland Security Fellowship
These awards are intended for students interested in pursuing the basic science and
technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. DHS realizes that the
country’s strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in
the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures. Areas of study include:
physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences including science policy, engineering,
mathematics, and computer science.
