Department of Children's & Women's Health

Welcome to the Department of Children's and Women's Health

Children and women’s health is a crucial cornerstone to the overall health of a community. Limited access to comprehensive, high-quality care can lead to poorer health outcomes. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for women in Northeast Texas and the second most common cause of cancer deaths among women. Teen birth rates in Northeast Texas are 20% higher than the state and 170% higher than national averages. Research has shown that the 450,000 children who live in East Texas have poorer health outcomes than state and national averages. These are just a few of the many reasons the School of Medicine has identified children and women’s health as a top priority.

The Department of Children's and Women’s Health is dedicated to increasing access to care. Recognizing the substantial workforce needs for this region, we are committed to developing strong educational curriculum for those who care for children and women. We hope to develop training programs for Pediatrics and Obstetrics-Gynecology to educate and train the next generation of physicians who can continue to advance pediatric and women’s healthcare for the region.

Division of Pediatrics

We plan to target expansion of pediatric primary care services across East Texas and increase our capacity to care for acutely ill children who require hospitalization. Additionally, the division of pediatrics will be recruiting pediatric subspecialists to support the region. Our hope is to decrease the burden of families currently facing the hurdles to travel to Dallas or Houston to receive the necessary care their child requires.

Division of Women's Health

A Women's Health Clinic will be opening in the new Medical Education Building in 2025. We are onboarding new OB-GYN providers to strengthen presence as well as recruit much needed women's health subspecialists to the region.

I came to UT Tyler to be part of the inspiring, motivated group of people who are passionate about making a meaningful impact on the health of this community. I saw an opportunity to be part of building something from the ground up that would impact so many lives, from students to patients and families.
