Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Curriculum 

The CACREP-Accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program at UT Tyler is primarily offered through face-to-face formats with a few courses each semester offered online. The CMHC program is highly interactive and delivered through didactic and experiential teaching; examples of teaching include instructor lectures, class presentations, small group discussions and projects, clinical role plays, clinical work with clients, and case conceptualization. Instructors incorporate clinical work and tangible real world learning as much as possible to help create a meaningful learning experience for students.

Students must take two elective courses in the CMHC Program, examples of electives include:

Counseling Children and Adolescents, Trauma Informed Counseling, Play Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Couples Counseling

 

Additionally, students are required to take Practicum and Internship:

COUN 5393 Practicum is a one semester 100 hour (including 40 direct hours) learning experience where students engage in clinical work at a community site

COUN 5396/7 Internship is a two semester 600 hour (including 240 direct hours) learning experience where student engage in clinical work at community sites

 

Students must also pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) to graduate from the CMHC program. This exam is offered each fall, spring, and summer in the on-campus student testing center. Information about registration is provided to students once they are in the CMHC program
