UT Tyler Psychology and Counseling
Transfer of Internet Based Coursework - Department Policy
Graduate students in Psychology and Counseling degree programs who wish to transfer for credit courses that are primarily taught over the internet (more than 80% of the course happens without face-to-face contact with the instructor and other students) must do the following:
The student must petition his/her advisor to allow the transfer of the internet course for use as a prerequisite or a graduate course. The student must provide a syllabus or detailed course description to allow an evaluation of the equivalence of the course to the one for which it will count in the UT Tyler program.
The university providing the course must be an accredited university. It is possible to check with the Registrar’s Office to find out if a university is so accredited.
Generally undergraduate prerequisites will be allowed, if judged equivalent by title and course description.
Graduate courses will undergo more scrutiny. An internet course must be substantially equivalent to the course for which it will substitute, to be allowed as a transfer class. There is a university 3 course (9 hour) limit to any transfer course, including internet courses. There are 3 types of graduate courses to be evaluated.
- Broad general courses, such as Human Growth and Development, Statistics, Psychopathology,
Career Counseling, School Counseling and Sex and Sexuality will be most appropriate
to transfer, if the advisor evaluates them as equivalent.
- Restricted graduate courses, such as Family or Counseling Theories, Cultural Diversity,
Ethics and Psychopharmacology will be evaluated individually by the instructors of
the same courses here. To be accepted as a transfer, the student must show competence
in the area, such as by passing a test in the subject matter, or use of course syllabus
and work products from the course.
- Forbidden graduate course for internet transfer are all applied and experiential courses. These include Behavior Modification, Cognitive Therapy, Applied Counseling, Applied Therapy and Practicum. Also forbidden are applied testing courses, including Assessment of Personality, IQ Assessment, and Assessment of Children and Adolescents. If you are in doubt, consult your advisor.
