Research, Grants and Scholarship
Dr. Mukul V. Shirvaikar earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1993, an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine, and his B. Tech. (BSEE equivalent) in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, India. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Shirvaikar serves on the editorial boards of the international Journal of Real Time Image Processing and the Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics. He is a member of the Technical Committee for the SPIE International Conference on Real Time Image Processing. Dr. Shirvaikar is an Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering Program Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He has two patents and published a textbook "Fundamentals of Real Time Systems" in 2018.
Dr. Shirvaikar joined the University of Texas at Tyler in 2003 and served as the Chair
of the Department of Electrical Engineering and MSEE Graduate Coordinator from 2007
to 2013. During his tenure the department had a successful ABET accreditation review,
recruited new faculty members with startup funding, and significantly increased undergraduate
and graduate student enrollment. He was the principal investigator for the “Back-To-Basics”
project from 2005 to 2008 sponsored by the Texas Workforce Development Commission.
The project was aimed at improving engineering student retention based on peer mentoring
and tutoring. He has also been awarded funding for several projects funded by industry,
aimed at developing the technical skills of engineering graduates by developing hands-on
laboratory curriculum and preparing them for successful careers as practicing engineers
in industry. He was also instrumental in developing and implementing an electrical
engineering freshman experience course that led to the successful engagement and retention
of students.
Dr. Shirvaikar has significant industrial experience, specializing in real time imaging
systems development. He worked at Texas Instruments where he developed highly reliable
systems such as network cameras, digital still cameras and hard disk recorders for
consumer electronics and security applications. These products were delivered in conjunction
with major Japanese manufacturers, with whom he served as a technical liaison. He
also developed automated visual inspection systems for wafers in their semiconductor
fabrication plants. Prior to this he worked at Pressco Technology, developing ultra-high-speed
inspection systems for food and beverage containers operating at speeds of 3600 parts
per minute. All of these products are currently in operation throughout the world.
