Texas Success Initiative
TSI
What is the TSI?
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a program mandated by the Texas Legislature
to ensure every non-exempt student enrolling into a Texas public college or university
is assessed for college readiness in the areas of reading, mathematics and writing.
(Texas Education Code, Section 51.3062). Admission into the university is not the
equivalent of enrollment eligibility. Unless exempt, all students must take an approved
TSI assessment prior to enrolling in classes. The TSI assessment has no bearing on
the acceptance or denial of admission. It is only used to determine placement into
college-level courses. An exemption from the TSI assessment is not an exemption from
meeting admission requirements.
Starting January 11, 2021, the TSI assessment changed. Students are now required to take the TSIA2.
Information about the new assessment and sample questions are available here.
TSIA2 Informational Brochure
Access the TSIA2 Student Portal. Here you can find the TSIA2 Study App and printable sample questions as well as
tutorials showing you how to use the calculator/highlighter tools.
Test results and how to send test results to Texas public institutions of higher education
are available via the TSIA2 Student Portal linked above.
What scores are required on the TSIA2?
Mathematics (for college-level coursework with a mathematics-intensive designation)
A college readiness classification (CRC) score of at least 950; or
A CRC score below 950 and a Diagnostic level of 6.
English Language Arts Reading (for college level coursework with reading, writing,
or reading and writing-intensive designation)
