Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) East – Northeast Region
The Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) East – Northeast Region is a Charter member of the National AHEC Organization (NAO) https://www.nationalahec.org now comprised of 56 AHEC programs and more than 235 centers operating in almost every state and the District of Columbia. AHEC programs work collaboratively with medical schools, nursing and allied health schools to improve health for underserved and under-represented populations.
Area Health Education Centers were first proposed by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education in the early 1970s as a means of addressing the maldistribution of health professionals in medically underserved areas throughout the nation.
Most AHEC programs receive both local state funding and federal funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Area Health Education Centers Program(hrsa.gov)

Why AHEC?
Because …
- too few students enter a career in health care.
- too few health care professionals choose employment in underserved areas.
- too few racial and ethnic minorities and underprivileged people choose careers in the health workforce.
- the population does not appropriately use the existing health care resources.
- divisions exist between the missions of health profession training programs and community needs.
