Information about Mentoring Programs

Patriot Student Mentor Program

The Patriot Student Mentor Program connects freshmen with knowledgeable faculty and staff across campus! The first year of college can come with challenges and the goal of the PSMP is to provide freshmen with a consistent, friendly face with whom they can always rely on. Best of all, participation in the mentoring program is FREE!

How are Mentors selected?

Mentors are selected through an application and screening process. Detailed questions about the mentor's experiences are asked, including:

  • Do you identify as a first-generation college student?
  • Have you served as a mentor before?
  • Why are you interested in serving as a mentor?
  • What are some of your personal interests, hobbies and volunteer experiences?

How are Mentees paired with a Mentor?

Mentees are matched with a mentor based on similar interests, areas of study or other traits that allow the mentor to be a great resource. We ask our mentors lots of questions to find the best match for them, including:

  • What are you most excited about as it relates to starting school at UT Tyler?
  • What are you most nervous about as it relates to starting school at UT Tyler?
  • Would you consider yourself more introverted or more extroverted?
  • What are some of your personal interests, hobbies and volunteer experiences?

Pairs are assigned and given one another's contact information. An exclusive calendar of events is available to all mentor and mentee pairings to help support their partnership and to provide an opportunity to spend time together with other mentor/mentee pairs on-campus.
