Respiratory Protection Program
Environmental Health and Safety
Respiratory hazards can include airborne contaminants such as biological particles, dusts, mists, fumes, and gases, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. These hazards may cause cancer, lung impairment, diseases, or death. Note that more than one respiratory hazard can be present at the same time. Respirators should be used for protection from contaminants in the air only if other hazard control methods are not practical or possible under the circumstances. Respirators should not be the first choice for respiratory protection in workplaces.
This program provides guidance for the selection, medical evaluation, use training, and fit testing of respiratory protective devices. The management of the Respiratory Protection Program is under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health & Safety. Using recognized methods, the EH&S Office will evaluate job sites and plans for hazards and recommend the appropriate respiratory protective equipment to provide protection for the task being performed. Medical surveillance and training will be coordinated for affected employees through the EH&S Office. The University is committed to protecting the health and safety of employees.
