Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP’s), also known as Aerial/Boom or Scissor Lifts, are common pieces of equipment found around campus. They enable UT Tyler personnel to work at heights safely. Aerial lifts have replaced ladders and scaffolding on many job sites due to their mobility and flexibility. Aerial lifts are defined as any vehicle-mounted device, telescoping or articulating, or both, which is used to position personnel, including extensible boom platforms, aerial ladders, articulating boom platforms, or vertical towers. Common hazards when working from aerial lifts include personal injury or death, fall from elevated level, objects falling from lifts, tip-overs, ejections from the lift platform, structural failures (collapses), electric shock (electrocutions), entanglement hazards, contact with objects, and contact with ceilings and other overhead objects. Before a lift can be used by UT Tyler Facilities or contractors EH&S must be contacted to have a pre-use inspection completed.
