Research
Dr. Patterson describes his most significant research contributions as manipulating protein cage architectures, primarily focused on protein cages and virus-like particles (VLPs) for applications in immunotherapeutics and biocatalysis. During his time here, he has published numerous papers in high impact journals including a cover article in Bioconjugate Chemistry.
Dr. Patterson consistently maintains the largest group of undergraduate researchers with an average of 7 students and has mentored over 20 students, 4 of which were co-authors on their first publication. Dr. Patterson has made a point to recruit dedicated undergrad freshmen into research so they may see projects through completion. Many of his students have moved on medical school, pharmacy school, and graduate schools at top rated universities.
Dr. Patterson’s research accomplishments are mirrored in teaching as he was awarded the Jack and Dorothy Fay White Fellowship for Teaching Excellence Award and Alpha Chi Honor Society Outstanding Faculty Award.
Biography
Dr. Dustin Patterson, Associate Professor of Chemistry, (right) is from Bloomdale, Ohio and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He started as an Assistant Professor at UT Tyler in 2014 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2019 and then to Full Professor in 2024. He manages his success with the support of his wife and four children.
