Biography

Maclovio Cantú IV (b.1990) born in South Bend, Indiana on the city’s West Side known colloquially and lovingly as “Lil Mex,” a lush immigrant community that has changed hands over the past century among migrant groups. Maclovio attended Indiana University South Bend where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a printmaking concentration.

During his time as a student Maclovio worked under the direct mentorship of Purveyor of Chicano Art, and former Assistant Provost Gilberto Cardenas, and Internationally renowned Master Printmaker, and founder of Segura Publishing, Joseph Segura at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. During this time, Maclovio worked with many Chicano/a artist, curators, and researchers. This experience inspired Maclovio to change the trajectory of his career and pursue a life as a Professor of Printmaking.

Maclovio earned a Master of Fine Arts with concentration in Printmaking Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. Maclovio’s intensive investigation into the creation, evolution, and history of the lowrider has led to development of expressions in the ChicanX sensibility Rasquachismo. This sensibility is suffused through his projects including paintings, prints and an unlikely connection made to the art of quilting. Maclovio’s works are created to serve as an homage to family life, Lowrider history, Kustom Kulture, and the neighborhoods that formed his identity and aesthetics.

Maclovio has exhibited Regionally, National, and Internationally. Current research includes Rasquache sensibility, Arte Povera, Lowrider aesthetics as an allegorical approach to the ChicanX experience.
