Generative AI for Students

AI Literacy for Students
The UT Tyler Writing Center supports students in all elements of the writing process. GenAI tools can aid in the writing process. However, these tools can also hinder a writer's growth. Writing is a skill that can be practiced and developed. The Writing Center promotes GenAI literacy with the following principles:
Invest Time in Learning the Tools: By familiarizing yourself with the capabilities and fallibilities of GenAI tools, you can use them more effectively. The rapid development of different tools can make it difficult to keep up. It can help to choose one tool to use consistently to learn proficiency in that tool. You can find more information about UT Tyler's policies regarding appropriate tools at The Office of Digital Learning. |
Use AI as a Partner in the Writing Process (not a replacement): GenAI can make suggestions but ultimately the human makes judgements about their writing. If you treat GenAI suggestions as learning opportunities, you can better improve your writing skills over time. GenAI should not replace your critical thinking and creativity as a writer. |
Maintain Your Voice: Each human writer has a unique voice. GenAI tools should not replace personal voice. In fact, an overreliance on GenAI tools can undermine your development as a writer. Ensure that your unique voice and perspective remain central to your writing. |
Consider the Ethical Implications: GenAI tools have ethical implications to the writing process. Understanding issues related to plagiarism, data privacy, and the potential biases embedded in AI algorithms can help you make better decisions. |
Seek Feedback: An important principle in AI Literacy is to "keep the human in the loop." Human interaction is part of the writing process. Writing center consultations and peer reviews can provide more nuanced insights that goes beyond what AI can offer. |
By promoting AI literacy, we aim to empower students to use these tools responsibly
and effectively, enhancing their writing skills while maintaining their academic integrity
and personal growth.
