Thank you for your interest in our family medicine residency program at The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine!
Beginning in 1985 as the first graduate medical education training program in East Texas, our program has been in existence for 39 years and is proud to be the flagship training program for our institution, part of the UT Health East Texas healthcare system which encompasses ten hospitals, over 60 clinics, and serves an area encompassing millions of East Texans. We are also proud that approximately 70 percent of our graduates over the years have chosen to stay in Texas and that several of our faculty love working here so much that they stay on staff as teaching faculty to remain heavily involved in training our next generation of family physicians!
Our program’s mission is to train our physicians in all aspects of family medicine and to develop skills that enable our residents to practice compassionate medicine and become leaders of their communities.
We strive to address health disparities at the population level while maintaining focus on the individual patient. We do this using a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, incorporating behavioral health, pharmacy and dietary services to help take a more holistic approach to the patient in our Family Medicine Clinic.
We are a family-friendly residency program and stress the importance of balance and well-being in our physicians’ lives and incorporate that into our training.
We also offer access to several master’s degree programs while completing residency through our School of Health Professions and other master’s degree-granting departments in our institution.
The Tyler area has a great deal to offer, including Tyler State Park, numerous lakes (Tyler, Palestine and Fork), walking and biking trails, great entertainment, excellent food, the Azalea District, affordable housing, multiple schooling options, The University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler Junior College and, most importantly, wonderful people and neighbors. Tyler Pounds Regional Airport allows for local access to travel, and Tyler has great proximity to the Dallas, Shreveport and Houston metro areas.
Again, many thanks for your interest, and I hope you strongly consider looking into our program as your home for the next three years!
