UT Tyler Electrical Engineering Graduate Degree, Admission Requirement Master Program

Admission Requirements-Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

UT Tyler Department of Electrical Engineering

Eligibility for admission to a graduate degree program is determined primarily on the basis of predictors of success in graduate study: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, grade point average computed on the last 60 undergraduate hours.

Students entering the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) program are expected to have a background equivalent to that of students graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) program offered at The University of Texas at Tyler, or to obtain such background through specified prerequisite coursework.

To be admitted to the MSEE program a student must meet the following admission requirements.

  1. Satisfactory grade point average on the student’s last four semesters of academic study and last 60 semester credit hours of upper division undergraduate or graduate courses.
  2. A bachelor’s degree in an Electrical Engineering program accredited by the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission. Students who have not earned such a degree will be required to complete prerequisite (leveling) coursework before starting the MSEE program as determined by the MSEE Program Coordinator.
  3. A demonstrated proficiency in the use of the English language, both spoken and written.
  4. Resume.
  5. Approval of the MSEE Program Coordinator and the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Consideration for admission to the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program will also be given to one or more of the following: the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, socioeconomic background, first generation college graduate, multilingual proficiency, geographic region of residence, and level of responsibility in other matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, and family responsibilities.

Students who do not have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a program meeting ABET accreditation requirements must successfully complete (with a 3.0 GPA) the following fundamental courses before beginning the graduate program:

  • A minimum of 12 semester credit hours of calculus.
  • A minimum of 3 semester credit hours in ordinary differential equations.
  • A Minimum of 8 semester credit hours of calculus-based university physics.
  • A minimum of 41 semester credit hours of engineering science and design, following an electrical engineering path, to include the equivalent of these courses:
    • Linear Circuits I with Lab 4 sch
    • Linear Circuits II 3 sch
    • Electronics I with Lab 4 sch
    • Programming Languages 6 sch
    • Digital Systems Design with Lab 3 sch
    • Microprocessors/Embedded Systems with Lab 3 sch
    • Electromagnetics 3 sch
    • Signals and Systems 3 sch
    • Control Systems 3 sch
    • Communications Theory 3 sch
    • Power Systems with Lab 3 sch
    • A Course in Engineering Design 3 sch

Details of the articulation coursework will be determined by the departmental graduate coordinator, in consultation with the applicant, based on a review of undergraduate transcripts.

International Students: You must be accepted to the master of science in electrical engineering program before you can begin graduate studies at UT Tyler. This requires submitting your official transcripts, your TOEFL scores and your affidavit of support to the International Office.
