Preceptor

Preceptor Criteria

The Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy offers pharmacists, who are interested in becoming a preceptor, its initial training/continuing education program, entitled "Preceptor Training". This training satisfies the Texas Board of Pharmacy requirement in order to register as a preceptor in the State of Texas. Additionally, all preceptors whether new or seasoned are required to participate in The Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy training, which satisfies ACPE accreditation standards. Participants in this training will receive continuing education credit. Requirements for becoming a preceptor include: the pharmacist must hold a current and active license with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, have at least one year of experience as a pharmacist or six months of residency training in an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited program and complete three hours of preceptor training provided by an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) approved provider, a Texas College of Pharmacy or a Texas Consortium on Experiential Programs (TCEP) approved program.

Expectations

The College of Pharmacy greatly appreciates all of the healthcare professionals who serve as preceptors for our students. Their willingness to donate time, provide support and contribute to the pharmacy profession is inspiring! A student's success as a pharmacist significantly depends on the experiential learning component of the curriculum. Our preceptors serve as role models, teachers and mentors for our future pharmacists. Therefore, it is our expectation that a preceptor act professionally and ethically in all circumstances. Additionally, it is the preceptor's responsibility to guide the student and facilitate the highest values in learning at their practice setting. The Office of Experiential Education will continually collaborate with each of our sites and preceptors to ensure that all experiences are organized, consistent and promote a higher standard of learning. Finally, the preceptor will provide feedback and evaluate the student's progress throughout the experience.

Preceptor Benefits

The College of Pharmacy recognizes our preceptors deserve great benefits for their hard work and dedication to the College. The utmost benefit a preceptor can receive is the reward of contributing to the education of pharmacy students and thereby giving back in a meaningful way to the profession of pharmacy. Once graduated from the College of Pharmacy, students become colleagues and our future generation of pharmacists. You, as their preceptor, will have helped mentor and train the future face of pharmacy. All College of Pharmacy approved preceptors are given the title of Adjoint Faculty within the College. As Adjoint Faculty, preceptors will have authorization to use online educational resources available through The University of Texas at Tyler library system. Additionally, preceptors have the ability to be promoted within the College in their role as Adjoint Faculty. The College of Pharmacy will also provide initial preceptor training which includes three hours of continuing education. Preceptors will also enjoy numerous networking opportunities at all College of Pharmacy events. The College will continue to work with the Experiential Education Advisory Committee to expand preceptor benefits with the development of the experiential education program.
