The University of Texas at Tyler
Office of Compliance
Mission
The role and mission of the University’s Office of Compliance is to support the University’s commitment to doing business and educating students with the highest standards of ethics, integrity, lawful conduct, and responsible citizenship. The Office of Compliance is fully aligned with the University's Mission, Vision, and Strategy. In particular, the Office of Compliance supports the Strategic Goal: "To operate using effective, efficient and creative strategies." Effectiveness and efficiency are accomplished by wisely using available resources to ensure programs are in place to prevent violations of the law—both at the institution level as well as the subject-specific and department levels. When prevention is not possible, these programs use available resources to detect and correct violations.
The objective of these compliance and ethics programs is fourfold:
- to prevent injury to our students, employees, and guests;
- to protect the University from litigation and fines;
- to prevent fraud and financial or data loss; and
- to safeguard the reputation of the University.
Goals
The primary goal of the Office of Compliance is to coordinate the University’s numerous subject-specific compliance efforts and provide senior leadership with a comprehensive view of the University’s compliance activities. In addition, the Office of Compliance aims to not only develop policies and procedures that help ensure compliance, but to help verify that these policies are documented, communicated, implemented, enforced, and monitored. It has the additional goal of maintaining a compliance program that will make the University a model for compliance not only in Texas, but nationwide.
The Program
The Office of Compliance currently consists of an Executive Director, three staff members, and an informal network of compliance leaders (subject-matter experts) from across the University. As it continues to grow and mature, additional documents, tools, committees, and functions will be added to this website.
Compliance Charter
The Compliance Charter describes the mission, authority, independence, and principal responsibilities of the Office of Compliance at the University. The charter was approved by the Institutional Executive Compliance Committee on May 27, 2020.
