How does online education benefit me?

Online education allows students to enroll in University courses that take place in a 'virtual' environment. This type of course delivery allows students, who may not otherwise be able to take classes during the day, an opportunity to benefit from higher education.

What does 'online' mean?

'Online' means taking classes through the internet. Online courses use Canvas as a platform to deliver course content. Canvas can be accessed through a high-speed internet connection.

What resources are available to me as an online student?

The University of Texas at Tyler strives to provide up-to-date and innovative resources for our students.

How do I communicate with my instructor and peers?

Online education requires a lot of written communication. Most instructor to students and peer to peer communication will take place through Canvas discussion boards, emails, video chat, etc.

What sort of time commitment does an online class require?

An online course typically requires at least 10 hours of prep and study time each week; a time commitment that is important to be successful.

How do I access my online class?

You will access your online course through Canvas. Canvas is a learning management system that enables you to log in to your classroom, interact with faculty and fellow students, and utilize various tools that will help you succeed in your learning experiences. You will find more information about Canvas at https://www.uttyler.edu/canvas/

Who do I contact if I have a problem accessing my course?

If you have technical problems associated with logging in to Canvas, you should contact the UT Tyler IT Department at itsupport@uttyler.edu.

Are online students eligible for financial aid?

Online students may be eligible for financial aid as long as they have met the criteria. For more information about the financial aid process, you can visit the financial aid webpage. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Team can be contacted at enroll@uttyler.edu or by calling 903.566.7180. 

Can I attend commencement?

Yes, you will be able to participate in commencement ceremonies. 

Will my diploma say "online"?

No, it will not indicate a modality. Your diploma will look the same as a traditional student attending an on-campus program.
