Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

A Major That Adds Value

Think of all the industries that depend on numbers: accounting, finance, computer science and insurance, to name a handful. Employers value the analytical and problem-solving skills cultivated via a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from The University of Texas at Tyler.

The study of mathematics emphasizes careful problem analysis, precise thought and expression, and the development of applied skills. Students in UT Tyler’s program build this foundation through faculty-guided research, opportunities to present at conferences and a comprehensive curriculum.

Why Major in Mathematics at UT Tyler?

How do you see yourself creating a career through mathematics? Think about the possibilities. Applied mathematicians put theories to work, solving problems in economics, science, medicine, engineering or management. Research mathematicians devise new theories and techniques and push the boundaries of the field’s applications. You may choose to teach mathematics at the K-12 level or pursue an advanced degree.

Design your future through UT Tyler’s flexible, hands-on program:

  • Modern Facilities: Explore applications of mathematics and current technologies in our modern building equipped with computer labs, tutoring areas, a student lounge, two computerized classrooms and Access Mathematica, the world’s most powerful global computing environment.
  • Undergraduate Research: Collaborate with award-winning faculty members on their research and present your findings at the joint meetings of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
  • Conferences: Participate in top mathematics conferences hosted on campus by UT Tyler. Events have included the Texas Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, the 45th annual Spring Topology and Dynamical Systems Conference and the annual spring meeting of the Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America.
  • Teacher Certification: Introduce grade 4-8 or 8-12 students to the potential and wonder of mathematics. Earn teacher certification through the College of Education and Psychology in conjunction with a BS in mathematics.
  • Get Involved: Become a member of UT Tyler’s chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the honorary national mathematics society.

Curriculum

Bachelor’s in mathematics students develop analytical skills and an analytical attitude. Learn to pay attention to all the assumptions involved in a given problem or situation and how to break down a complicated challenge into a series of manageable steps. Then, prepare to test conclusions to make sure they’re based on adequate data and accurate reasoning.

What Can You Do With a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics?

Careers that rely on math often take the top spots on lists of the country's best jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of mathematicians to grow by 31% through 2031 — much faster than average for all occupations.

Potential career paths for BS in mathematics graduates include management consulting, information technology, engineering, biotechnology, cryptography, actuarial science, statistics, finance or education. Mathematics additionally serves as excellent preparation for pre-med and pre-law students. Mathematics majors often receive top scores on the MCAT exam.

The Department of Mathematics has developed career tracks for students to follow within the mathematics major, including but not limited to accounting, actuarial sciences, bioinformatics, data analytics, engineering, financial analysis and pre-health. Choosing one of these tracks as a mathematics major will help students prepare for and obtain their desired mathematical careers.

Graduates of UT Tyler’s mathematics bachelor’s program have found employment in such organizations and businesses as Fairfield-Nobel, NASA and Whitehouse Independent School District. Others have entered PhD programs at The University of Nebraska, The University of Utah and The University of Texas at Arlington.
