Rooted in data, technology and research, the Master of Science in finance program at The University of Texas at Tyler’s Soules College of Business helps you look ahead to professional opportunities as an investment portfolio manager, financial risk manager, banking officer, corporate treasurer or financial planner, among other roles in the field. The MS in finance is a STEM program: international students who complete all requirements are eligible for up to three years of Optional Practical Training (U.S. employment), instead of only one year.

What You’ll Learn

The Master of Science in Finance is a 30-credit-hour program (36 including prerequisite courses) most students complete in a year. Those on the 4+1 program begin graduate-level coursework during their fourth undergraduate year to earn two credentials in five years.

The program is split between six credit hours of prerequisite courses, 24 credit hours of required finance courses and six credit hours of required electives covering business intelligence and analysis, operations management, international economics, central banking and monetary policy, and economics for managers. 

Students who complete the program grow their confidence in:

  • Evaluating tradeoffs between risks and returns using appropriate quantitative measures
  • Valuing financial and real assets using a variety of appropriate quantitative methods
  • Providing sound financial recommendations for corporate financial management and personal wealth management
  • Communicating results and recommendations suitable for audiences with varying levels of sophistication

Those starting the program without a bachelor’s in finance or similar knowledge base may be required to complete prerequisite coursework before beginning the required course sequence.

How to Apply

We open the Master of Science in finance to anyone with a bachelor’s degree interested in pursuing this career path. The Soules Colleges of Business evaluates all candidates through prior academic achievements, GPA and a satisfactory score on the GMAT or GRE, among other factors.

Understand that all candidates are expected to have a background or knowledge equivalent to UT Tyler’s BBA in finance before starting all required courses. You may need to take additional prerequisite courses to get up to speed and fulfill all prerequisite coursework with a satisfactory GPA before starting graduate-level finance courses.

To apply to the Master of Science in Finance program:

  • Apply Online
  • Pay the application fee.
  • Submit official transcripts and unofficial transcripts to the Office of Graduate Admissions
  • Submit official GMAT scores to the Office of Graduate Admissions, and unofficial scores may be sent to the Soules College of Business Graduate Advising Office
  • There are additional requirements for international students, such as a detailed international transcript evaluation, which determines an applicant's degree comparability to a U.S. bachelor's degree (UT Tyler does NOT evaluate international transcripts), and scores on English proficiency exams such as the TOEFL iBT or IELTS.

MSPA FAQs

Candidates interested in the streamlined 4+1 pathway have the option of applying for graduate admissions after completing at least 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework and at least three upper-division finance courses. Students must have earned a 3.4 or higher GPA for all completed coursework and may be required to supply GMAT scores. Students must be officially admitted to the Master of Science in Finance program before starting their fifth year.
