Applying as a Current Student

UT Tyler Honors College

Current UT Tyler students have the opportunity to enter the Honors College for a two or three year commitment that focuses on expanding major-specific coursework and offers the opportunity to pursue individual research and service.

Current students who join the Honors College at the start of their sophomore year will take at least one Honors Core course each semester before moving into their major specific research or service.

Students who join the Honors College at the start of their junior year will begin their time in honors by choosing their Honors Track: Research or Service & Leadership. Students who choose the Research Track will contract with faculty members in upper-division courses within their major to complete additional work. Contracts may include an additional project, additional readings, additional meetings with a faculty member, additional research time in the faculty member's lab, etc. Students on the Service & Leadership Track will find a community to serve and begin developing ideas for their Senior Project.

In the senior year, students in the Research Track will investigate a research question over the course of an academic year and compose either a paper for submission to an undergraduate research journal or a poster for presentation at an undergraduate research conference. The students in the Service & Leadership Track will work with the Honors Coordinator to develop a year-long project to implement in the Honors College, across the UT Tyler campus, or in the East Texas region.  Students in both tracks will also present their Honors Senior Project at the Lyceum.
