4+1 B.S. in HRD to M.S. in HRD
UT Tyler Department of Human Resource Development
What is the 4+1 Program?
UT Tyler students can begin taking courses towards a master's degree during the junior and senior years of undergraduate study. The 4+1 program allows undergraduate students to begin graduate coursework at no additional cost. Graduate courses will also satisfy upper-level electives in the undergraduate degree program, saving students time.
How Will 4+1 Affect My Undergraduate Degree?
Undergraduate HRD students who take graduate courses can earn up to the following 9 hours as part of the upper-level major requirements for the HRD bachelor's degree. Even better, the graduate courses also fulfill the requirements for the graduate degree program.
You Take: | And it counts for: |
HRD 5343 Foundations of HRD | HRD 3301 Intro to HRD & Perform. Mgmt. Sys |
HRD 5317 Training Design | HRD 3312 Training, Selection and Recruiting |

Will It Save Me Money?
Yes. Students who enroll in the 4+1 program will pay the same rate as undergraduate courses for graduate credits that are part of the program.
What if I'm Not Sure About a Graduate Degree at UT Tyler?
If you're unsure about graduate school, then the 4+1 program is perfect. There is no better way to explore a master's degree than taking graduate classes at no additional cost as part of the undergraduate degree program.
What About Scholarships?
Students entering their first semester of graduate school can apply for the New Graduate Fellowship worth $1,000.00. In addition, they may be eligible for funding as a graduate research assistant, graduate teaching assistant, or other competitive funding.
What if I Have Already Taken One or More of the Courses at the Undergraduate Level (Ex. HRD 3301)?
You will still be able to participate in the 4+1 program, however, only two courses could be taken at the graduate level and applied to both degrees. In the example above you would still be required to complete the HRD 5343 class.
