Applications are open for The University of Texas at Tyler 2025 Composer Mentor Songwriting Program. East Texas high school juniors and seniors with an interest in songwriting and/or music are encouraged to apply.
“This free program, founded in 2014, matches area pre-college students with UT Tyler student composers, faculty and expert guests in an extended mentoring experience,” said Dr. Kyle Gullings, UT Tyler professor of music and coordinator of the program. “This is an excellent opportunity for high schoolers to learn about our music department, work with others and develop their skills.”
Application deadline is Monday, Jan. 27, and space is limited. Applicants are encouraged
to submit a demo song/recording. To apply or for more information, visit

Participants meet weekly to learn about writing music and must be available for all sessions. The program, which begins Thursday, Feb. 6, culminates with a live concert of the created works, performed by a band drawn from program participants. This year’s program will focus on popular-style songwriting, performed live by singer(s), guitar, piano, bass, drums and other determined instruments, Gullings added.
This year, the university’s School of Performing Arts is collaborating with guest artist Matt Magill of The Listening Lounge. For additional information, contact Gullings at kgullings@uttyler.edu.
