UT Tyler Houston Engineering Center Students Shine at National Steel Bridge Contest

Students at The University of Texas at Tyler Houston Engineering Center placed first in cost estimation and third in aesthetics at the 2024 American Institute of Steel Construction Student Steel Bridge Competition National Finals.
At the annual contest, collegiate teams build steel bridges under a time limit and are judged in various categories.
“This incredible accomplishment is a testament to the dedication, hard work and talent
of our
remarkable team members,” said Dr. Yasser Mahgoub, UT Tyler professor of instruction
and
Houston Engineering Center director. “We also extend our deepest gratitude to the
College of
Engineering and civil engineering and construction management departments for their
unwavering
support and encouragement throughout this journey.”
UT Tyler HEC steel bridge team members are Mazin Mukdadi, captain; Antonino Duenas,
cocaptain;
and Jose Herrera, Alexander Carranza, Abel Perez, Antonio Melchor, Jennifer Valle
Camacho, Clare Roewe, Cristian Peralez, Jacquelyn Cazares, Jason Salgado, Oswald Andrade
and Guillermo Oliver, all of Houston.
Representing Region 6, UT Tyler HEC’s first appearance at nationals was 2021.
Nearly 45 out of almost 200 teams across North America this year advanced to the SSBC
national
finals, which is organized by AISC in collaboration with the American Society of Civil
Engineers.
Outstanding overall performance in regional competitions, and only participation in
those
competitions, qualifies eligible teams for nationals.
As the largest ASCE student symposium worldwide, Region 6 consists of Texas, Oklahoma,
New
Mexico and Mexico and includes schools such as UT Austin, Texas A&M University, University
of
Oklahoma, New Mexico State University, Tech de Monterrey and Universidad Autónoma
del Estado
de Morelos.
