UT Tyler Adds New Reading Certificates in Master of Education Program

The University of Texas at Tyler offers two new certificates within the Master of Education in reading program. Registration is now open for the literacy coaching certificate, while registration for the dyslexia certificate begins Monday, April 1.

The nine-credit UT Tyler literacy coaching certificate focuses on literacy coaching theories, research, roles and responsibilities. The 12-credit UT Tyler dyslexia certificate focuses on diagnostic assessment and dyslexia instruction and intervention. Both are 100% online and take one year to complete.

"We are pleased to offer these new certificates within our nationally recognized Master of Education in reading program,” said Dr. Amir Mirmiran, UT Tyler provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “These certificates will help our graduates meet a critical need to enhance literacy education in our region and better serve primary and secondary schools in East Texas."

Graduates who earn the literacy coaching certificate become literacy coaches in their school and/or district, supporting other PreK-12 teachers to implement effective literacy instruction. Graduates who earn the dyslexia certificate can support educational diagnosticians. They also can help develop the reading, writing and spelling skills in PreK-12 students who are known to have dyslexia –– a learning disorder that makes those skills, especially reading, difficult.

Other certifications housed in the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology include educational diagnostician, superintendent and school counseling.
