The University of Texas at Tyler Master of Education in reading program was recognized at the national level by the International Literacy Association.
ILA, a top-tier professional literacy organization, demands high standards for the preparation of literacy professionals and serves as a leader in publishing innovative, peer-reviewed literacy research. The university’s three-year selection process included a rigorous self-study to showcase how program courses exemplify ILA standards.
Housed in the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology, the 36 credit-hour program is 100% online and can be completed in two years.
“The ILA recognition confirms that our program has the highest standards and rigor in the field of literacy education and is among the best literacy professional preparation programs in the nation,” said Dr. Pradeep “Max” Dass, UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology dean. “It is a testament to the exceptional quality and commitment of our literacy program faculty to preparing the highest caliber of literacy professionals.”
UT Tyler’s program offers courses and field experiences that prepare educators to work with children, youth and adults who have various learning needs and represent diverse cultural, socioeconomic and linguistic backgrounds.
Graduates gain expertise in administering literacy assessments, using data analysis to determine students’ literacy strengths and needs, and designing evidence-based literacy instruction to improve learning outcomes. They also become eligible to take the Texas Education Agency Reading Specialist Certification exam.
