Students from The University of Texas at Tyler University Academy-Tyler campus were among the best at this year’s state University Interscholastic League Academics meet.

UA-Tyler senior Grace Dudley placed first in the ready writing competition. UA-Tyler junior Ian Orr placed second in Lincoln Douglas debate, and UA-Tyler junior Hayden Burns placed second in informative speech. All three advanced to state by placing among the top three in their respective UIL contests at the regional level.

“We’re very proud of Grace, Ian and Hayden. They represented the University Academy extremely well,” said Dr. Jo Ann Simmons, UA superintendent.

Dudley will attend UT Tyler this fall and major in psychology.

“Grace will apply her self-reflective nature to a field that will benefit from her compassionate generosity of spirit,” said En-Tze Chong, UA-Tyler UIL speech and debate coach. “Ian and Hayden have every intention of returning to state next year with an eye on that first-place prize and the glory and scholarships that go with it.”

The UIL academic meet tests students, both individually and in teams, on their knowledge and skills over many content areas including speech and debate, writing, math and literary knowledge.
