UT Tyler University Academy Students Take Top Honors in Regional History Competition

The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that University Academy charter school students earned top honors in the regional 2020 Texas Citizen Bee history and civic competition.

Mitchell Campbell and JP Kinsner, 10th graders from Tyler, placed first and second, respectively. Campbell represented Region VII at the state competition, which was held via Zoom.

“These students worked very hard, and we are so proud of their accomplishments,” said Dr. Jo Ann Simmons, University Academy superintendent.

The Citizen Bee is hosted by the State Bar of Texas Law-Related Education Department.

Students must have a strong knowledge of current events and compete in written and oral categories covering such topics as people and documents, the Constitution, landmark Supreme Court cases, and civic values and skills.

The University Academy is a public university charter school that incorporates STEM curriculum into daily classroom education and utilizes a hands-on learning approach. The charter school is operated by the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology and has campuses in Tyler, Longview and Palestine.
