The University of Texas at Tyler announced that the University and Tyler Junior College are community partners in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Research Academy to enhance STEM research and education.

Five UT Tyler students and two TJC students have been accepted as 2019 fellows. Participants are mentored by UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering faculty.

The program, sponsored by UT System and supported by the National Science Foundation, is designed to provide research experiences to undergraduate students from underrepresented populations and encourage them to pursue graduate-level science, technology, engineering and mathematics studies.

Fellows, by hometown and faculty mentor, are:

DESOTO – Kendrick Crawford, biochemistry, Dr. Tanya Shtoyko.

RUSK – Ebony Griffin, biology, Dr. Lance Williams.

THE WOODLANDS – Alejandro Ibarra Narvaez, biology, Dr. Joshua Banta.

TYLER – Gabriella Morales-Alvarez, civil engineering, Dr. Mena Souliman; Luke Smith, mathematics, Dr. Katie Anders; TJC student Martin Morales-Alvarez, electrical engineering, Dr. Prabha Sundaravadivel; and TJC student Marco Rodriguez, mechanical engineering, Dr. Fredericka Brown.

Each student receives a fellowship stipend for their participation, and faculty mentors receive funding for supplies and materials to support their student's research activities. The students will give poster presentations of their research projects at the annual UT LSAMP Student Research Conference scheduled for August 2019 at UT El Paso.

Dr. Stephen B. Rainwater, UT Tyler chair and associate professor of computer science, serves as the University's LSAMP campus director. Dr. Neil Gray, dean of the UT Tyler College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Neil Ford, UT Tyler professor of biology, serve in supporting roles on the program's local advisory committee. Gigi Delk, TJC computer science faculty member and UT Tyler adjunct senior lecturer, serves as the TJC LSAMP campus director.
