UT Tyler Students Successful at National Model UN Conference

The University of Texas at Tyler announced that students in the Model United Nations Program were recognized at the 2019 National Model United Nations Conference in New York, New York.

The group was awarded the Outstanding Delegation Award for their representation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This distinction is presented to the top delegations at the conference and acknowledges outstanding character involvement, teamwork, leadership, speaking and negotiating abilities as well as knowledge of the issues and proper usage of procedure rules.

UT Tyler students honored were Awa Badjie of The Gambia, West Africa; Samantha Myers of Palestine; Danielle Guerra of Houston; Aryn Walker of Caddo Mills; Erika Cerrillo of Athens; Chris Nafrady of Longview; Keaton Shelley of Kilgore; Melanie Escobar of Niche; Sean Coplen of Ennis; Natoya Inglis of Desruisseaux, Saint Lucia; Mariama Bah of Sukuta, The Gambia; Halie Moore of Beckville; and Abbey Marrs, Madison Jobe and Mindy Campos, all of Tyler.

NMUN-NY is the largest inter-collegiate Model UN simulation with more than 5,000 students from colleges across six continents in attendance. Jobe, Guerra and Coplen also were awarded "Outstanding Position Papers" in their respective committees. This award acknowledges outstanding work in research and writing.

"This year at the conference, one student from each delegation was asked to give a speech in the United Nations General Assembly Hall. Our very own Abbey Marrs represented the delegation from UT Tyler and gave an excellent speech on the importance of working together to support the Sustainable Development Goals," said director Dr. Robert Sterken, UT Tyler professor of political science.

The University has sent student delegations to NMUN-NY and other conferences nationally and globally since 2007, when professor and department chair Dr. Marcus Stadelmann began the program.

The Department of Political Science is currently recruiting for the 2019-20 academic year.
