Renowned psychiatrist Dr. Norman Rosenthal will give a public lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 in The University of Texas at Tyler Braithwaite Recital Hall, Dr. Paul Streufert, UT Tyler executive director of special academic programs, announced.

A clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, Rosenthal was the first psychiatrist to diagnose Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. His book titled, "The Gift of Adversity: The Unexpected Benefits of Life's Difficulties, Setbacks, and Imperfections," was distributed to all first-year UT Tyler students at their advising appointments.

"In addition to the public talk at 6 p.m., we are hosting a reception for Dr. Rosenthal from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Meadows Lobby, right outside of the Braithwaite Recital Hall. Please join us to meet Dr. Rosenthal, who will be signing books at this event," Streufert said.

Rosenthal, who grew up in apartheid South Africa, uses stories from his youth and his professional career to encourage readers to think through their own life's challenges.

Hosts and sponsors for both events are the UT Tyler Freshman Book Committee, along with the Honors and Global Awareness Through Education Programs.
