Dr. Doug Ried is the 2016 recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Rufus A. Lyman Award for outstanding research contributions. He serves as The University of Texas at Tyler Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy associate dean for academic affairs and Sam A. Lindsey Professor.

He is now only one of two researchers as a lead author who have been given the Lyman Award three times since its inception in 1969. Serving UT Tyler since February 2014, Ried is well known nationally in pharmacy education for educational innovation and assessment of curricular excellence.

"Faculty, staff and students of the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy are proud that Dr. Ried was recognized by the AACP for his outstanding publication in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education," said Dr. Lane Brunner, Fisch College of Pharmacy dean.

The Lyman Award is presented annually to the author or authors of the best paper published in the journal. Ried's acknowledged publication is titled, "Towards an Operational Definition of Clinical Competency in Pharmacy."

"The topic is an important one for assuring the competency of pharmacy students in their pharmacy practice experiences," Ried said. "Not only pharmacy has been struggling with this issue but other health professions as well."

Ried will be honored at this year's AACP Annual Meeting in July.

He holds a master of science and Ph.D. in social and administrative pharmacy, both from the University of Minnesota.

The mission of AACP is to lead and partner with members in advancing pharmacy education, research, scholarship, practice and service to improve societal health. For more information, visit aacp.org/.
