Three students at The University of Texas at Tyler have created a short documentary
film to promote the importance of studying abroad, Dr. Paul Streufert, UT Tyler executive
director of special academic programs, announced.
After studying abroad with the Global Awareness Through Education program in Brazil and Argentina this summer, UT Tyler juniors Cecil Armstrong of Hemphill, along with Melissa Salgado and Leslie Reyna, both of Tyler, decided to make a film that would showcase the impact studying abroad has on education.
‘Within Your Reach’ will premiere at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the UT Tyler University Center theater.
The 30-minute film aims to share the stories of UT Tyler students and faculty who have experienced what it is like to study abroad in order to not only create community interest in travel education, but also to promote global awareness.
“Viewers will learn that no matter where you live, people are people, and everyone’s story matters,” Salgado said.
The university plans to incorporate the film in future GATE promotional materials, Streufert added.
GATE is a two-year program designed for incoming UT Tyler freshmen interested in a globally focused, culturally diverse education. GATE offers internationally-infused core curriculum classes, cultural activities and service opportunities. The program culminates in a five-week study abroad experience the summer after a student’s sophomore year.
The GATE destinations for 2015 and 2016 will be Italy and Ghana, respectively.
