Students Save Money Through Textbook Rental Program

July 11,2014

The University of Texas at Tyler Bookstore offers a multi-channel textbook rental program designed to deliver maximum savings and convenience for UT Tyler students, Jesse Acosta, vice president for administration, announced.

The program, which began three years ago, allows UT Tyler students to rent their textbooks for less than the cost of purchasing a new printed textbook. Students may rent books online at http://uttyler.bncollege.com or at the store located in the UT Tyler University Center.

UT Tyler saved students $563,694 last year through the program.

“The textbook rental program is incredibly popular with students, with spring sales of new rentals increasing 117 percent over the fall semester and sales of used rentals increasing 78 percent,” said Casey Bain, store manager. “We’re committed to providing students with the widest range of content options and price points available.

“Whether students are interested in new books, used, digital or the extremely popular rentals, they know they can find what they want and need at the campus bookstore – at incredible savings.”

How it Works

The rental period is for the duration of the term/semester. Books are due back at the bookstore no later than the Monday following finals. Students may return the books in person or by mail.

Courtesy ‘reminder’ emails will go out to students as the end of the term/semester approaches. Books not returned or returned in an unusable condition will be subject to replacement and processing fees.

Students may pay the rental fees using any form of tender currently accepted by the bookstore – including student financial aid and campus debit cards. For security purposes, a valid credit card must be provided regardless of the tender used.

Students may highlight or mark the rented books just as they would if they purchased a book and planned to sell it back to the bookstore. Rentals may be converted to a purchase during the first two weeks of class. The bookstore also offers a buyout option on all rentals, Bain added.
