Dr. Helene Hakim, director of The University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center nursing programs, has received the Sigma Theta Tau-Iota Nu Chapter’s Excellence in Leadership Award, Dr. Van Patterson, UT Tyler LUC director, announced.
“I am honored to have received this award but credit should also be given to Iota Nu and my faculty,” said Hakim. “While serving as president-elect and president of Iota Nu, I was presented with remarkable opportunities to further develop my leadership skills. I also credit my faculty and staff. We work as a team, and they are an incredible group who make me look good.”
Persons nominated for the award are selected based upon the following criteria: Receives local, national and/or international recognition as a nursing leader in education, practice, administration and/or research; influences leadership in nursing through visionary and innovative approaches to leadership; creates an environment that enhances the image of nursing/nurses; and participates in the development of nursing leaders and leadership.
Sigma Theta Tau is the international honor society for nursing. Iota Nu is the local chapter of STT and has more than 400 members in the areas of academia, practice and research. Iota Nu honors members who have been nominated for Excellence in Research, Excellence in Education, Excellence in Nursing Practice Excellence in Leadership, Outstanding Student Performance, Dedication to Chapter and the Barbara Cushing Award of Excellence every two years at its awards dinner.
